SKETCH TO DESIGN
Making my paper sculptures begins in my sketchbook, where I like to do watercolour paintings and scribe interesting facts I learn about my subject along the way. I draw basic shapes based on my drawings and cut them out and glue them together, to form a three dimensional design. No computer programmes are used along the way, just me, armed with a protractor and a pair of pointy scissors.
FAVOURITE
My favourite design is usually the new guy I’m working on! I like watching their character take shape at my desk. My favourite part of making my paper sculptures is figuring out the new designs. Sometimes I draw something backwards and the shapes I build are unexpected, but that can also lead me to designing something else entirely new.
PAPER ENGINEER
I have been making my paper sculptures for 16 years now, and each one is a unique piece of contemporary craft.
My owl sculptures remain the most popular design, particularly the barn owls. The designs have evolved over the years, but it has always been my aim for my paper engineering to have a cartoonlike, illustrative quality. I always aim for quirky and characterful in my paper design, rather than realistic.
A WALK IN THE WOODS
My woodland wall art strives to bring the joy I find in the Great Outdoors right into your home, to bring cheer to your décor. It is so delightful to be greeted by a robin in the garden, and every beautiful, curious creature that shares our patch of green. Lots of my designs take inspiration from an English country garden, but I also like to make wildlife art of subjects further afield, such as parrots and hummingbirds. Birds will always be my first love. It might be the fancy hairdos and the hopping!
HOW IT’S MADE
I paint or monoprint onto plain white (recycled) paper to create textures and patterns that will be unique to each sculpture. Then I cut out petals or feather shapes and build onto the paper form. I’m allergic to glue, so I have to be very careful and neat while I’m building my sculptures! Legs or stems are made from a sturdy steel wire, wrapped in paper. Each sculpture is finished with a UV protective varnish and black plastic cabochon eyes.
BESPOKE AND COMMISSIONS
I’m always happy to make something especially for you. Sometimes that’s as simple as a customer wanting different colour flowers on their floral wreath, or for the bird to have a different pose. Sometimes I am asked to make completely new designs, from miniature houses, dog portraits, or paper replicas of something sentimental.
