Barn Owl Family on a white hydrangea Wreath
This barn owl family is a unique paper sculpture depicting a large mamma owl and a baby barn owl. The large barn owl has a white belly with golden brown feathers on her sides and back. Her head is angled to the right as you look at her, towards her baby. Her baby is made from the same screen printed papers, so they match. The large owl is approximately 26cm tall, and her baby is about 10 cm tall.
They sit on a floral wreath, festooned with white hydrangea blooms and green leaves. The flowers are in several clusters around the wreath. White hydrangeas symbolise purity, grace and abundance. They are said to be the ideal flowers for weddings and new babies.
This whimsical wall art measures around 35 cm (14 inches) wide and 45 cm (18 inches) tall.

Barn owls were among my first designs as a paper artist. I was working part time at a jewellery studio at the time, and was entrusted to make a wintery window display. I thought barn owl families on snowy branches would make a nice mix of elegant and festive.
I have made quite a few owls over the years, but no two are ever the same. The barn owl design has gone through several updates over time. They are also individually mono printed by hand, which means that each owl has its own textures and colour palette. This Mamma and baby were made together so that they are a matching set. I made this piece as Spring began, and was inspired by the emerging blossom in the fruit trees around us. Spring is possibly my favourite season as it brings warmth, hope and bird song, and I hoped to imbue a love of this happy season into this piece.
The barn owl is often called the ghost owl, due to its white belly and piercing shriek. In India, the barn owl is transport for the Hindu goddess of Wisdom. Lakshmi. They are also known to represent the Greek goddess of Wisdom, Athena, making barn owls the original wise owls.
BESPOKE SCULPTURES, MADE BY HAND
Each paper sculpture is entirely handmade, from design to hand painted paper, to every hand cut feather or petal. Bird sculptures are given their own pose and expression. This ensures every piece is unique. If you own one of my sculptures, yours is the only one of its kind.
HANGING YOUR SCULPTURE
Each wall sculpture has a hand shaped copper coated steel hook, suspended on invisible fishing line, at a 30 cm drop from the top of the wreath. This hook will hang on a nail tack or picture hook on your wall. The sculptures are robust, but lightweight, so will only require one tack.
All tree stump standing sculptures are fitted with a cork base, to ensure the sculpture will not mark your furniture.
PACKAGING INFORMATION
Every sculpture is wrapped in tissue paper, in a cardboard box, adorned with paper ribbon. All packaging comes from recycled sources and can be recycled in your paper bin again, including any stickers or paper tape.
SHIPPING INFORMATION
Delivery to any UK address is free. Shipping to the US is £20, and orders to Europe is £25. If you cannot see your location at the checkout, please get in touch and I can set that up for you.
There may be taxes or other charges applicable when your parcel reaches your country, which you will be responsible for paying. Please get in touch if you would like me to investigate what charges may be applicable for you.
CARE INFORMATION
All sculptures are varnished with a UV protective lacquer, which keeps their colours bright and seals their edges. They are easy to care for; all they need is a tickle with a feather/microfibre duster every now and then. Wall sculptures hang on the wall via a copper coated steel hook, suspended by invisible fishing line at a drop of 30 cm from the top of the wreath.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
I aim to run as environmentally friendly a business as I can. All sculptures are made with recycled 300 GSM paper. Paints, lacquers and lustres are vegan. My sculptures are wrapped with entirely recyclable packaging, from the paper ribbon to tape. I use acrylic paints and plastic eyeballs and invisible fishing line to hang the wreaths, which I use sparingly to minimise waste.
